Essential Question Options:
1. You have been tasked with providing district-wide professional development to help your district meet all the AT needs of your students with diverse special needs. What needs to be included for comprehensive and effective professional development? Develop a district-wide PD plan to help your district understand what is available and to help them reflect on their current instructional methods. Is what is in place working to reach all learners, including those with special needs?
2. Your school only provides assistive technology for students with complex special needs and is not addressing the needs of students with high-incidence special needs such as learning disabilities, executive function issues or mild cognitive impairments. How will you ensure the needs of all students are addressed? What tools do you believe your school needs to implement effective UDL and AT to meet the needs of this category of students who are overlooked? (The issues include reading below grade level, difficulties understanding content, problems with written output due to a variety of reasons, problems with organizing materials).
3. A new family is moving into your district. One son is a middle school student, autistic, non-verbal, decodes at grade level, uses visual supports to follow his routines and has infrequent aggressions toward staff. Another son is a high school student who is on grade level in all areas but has a motor disease which affects all extremities. He is able to power his w/c using a head switch, but will need to be assessed for AT needs in his new environment. What will the plan look like for these two students.
4. Participants in this class have identified the main obstacles to AT implementation as insufficient financial resources, lack of time, fear of technologies and lack of training/PD. How would your group overcome these obstacles so that all students, including students on IEPs, needs are met?
5. Brainstorm another idea as a group and present it to the instructor.
Students can choose the type of presentation tool they would like to use based on their professional needs/preferences: Explain Everything App, Google Presentation, Powtoon, Prezi, Video, 30 Hands app, Adobe Voice app, etc.Let the instructor know which tool you would like to use.
